The Fire Extinguisher VR Simulator is a virtual reality training tool that we designed to aid instructors in demonstrating the importance of knowing all five(5) classifications of fire, so that workers can properly match the correct extinguisher during a potential fire emergency. Users will also demonstrate their understanding of extinguishing a fire using the P.A.S.S. method.

Why is effective fire extinguisher training so important?
Workers who may be asked to extinguish an incipient stage fire must be properly trained in the use of a fire extinguisher. Using an incorrect extinguishing agent during a fire can have catastrophic consequences to property and/or the safety of all workers in the area.
What are the five (5) fire classes?
According to the NFPA, the fire classes are:
Why consider VR?
A 2015 study published in the International Journal of Injury Control and Safety Promotion found VR/AR training more effective than traditional classroom training. Students also showed improved knowledge retention and recall. Similar results for memory retention were found in a 2018 study from University of Maryland researchers, published in the journal Virtual Reality.

According to the NFPA, the fire classes are:
- A = Ash (fuels that leave ash; wood, paper, or plastic)
- B = Boil/Burst (flammable liquids and gases)
- C = Current/Charge (electrical fires)
- D = Dent/Ding (flammable metals)
- K = Kitchen (fats, foods and grease fires)
