OSHA requires each employer to develop and maintain a written Fire Prevention Plan for their workplaces. The purpose of the Fire Prevention Plan is to help prevent a fire from occurring in the workplace altogether. It describes the fuel sources (hazardous or other materials) that are on-site that could initiate or contribute to the spread of a fire. The plan also addresses the facility’s building systems, such as fixed fire extinguishing systems in place to help prevent or control the spread of a fire…. and alarm systems, in place to warn workers in the event of one.

- Be familiar with basic fire safety terminology
- Understand basic Fire Theory
- Understand differences between Emergency Action Plans & Fire Protection Plans
- Know where to go to find fire hazard information (signs, tags, labels)
- Understand the principles of fire prevention vs fire protection
- Demonstrate a basic understanding of fire-fighting media and techniques
- Understand the responsibilities of “Fire-Watch Personnel”
- Recognize the need to create a Fire Escape Plan for home
- Share anything learned during this course with others
Upon completion of their site-specific fire protection training, each participant must:
- Be able to recognize fire hazards in their workplace
- Be familiar with the established evacuation routes
- Know where fire hazards can be reported
- Know where primary and secondary muster points are located
- Know who at their facility is trained in first aid
- Know who in the facility is trained to fight fires
- Understand their role when an emergency occurs
